How to choose a lathe

A lathe turns round parts such as shafts, flanges and bushings. Choose it by the size and weight of your parts, the material and how many parts you make.

Swing and length

The swing over the bed is the largest diameter the lathe can turn. The distance between centres is the longest part that fits between the headstock and the tailstock. Choose with some reserve above your largest part.

Spindle bore

A large spindle bore lets long bar stock and tubes pass through the headstock. It is useful for shafts and pipes and for feeding bar material.

Power and speed

Heavy roughing in steel needs power and torque at lower speeds. Small parts and finishing need higher speeds. Check the motor power and the speed range together.

Manual or CNC

A manual lathe suits repair work, toolrooms and one-off parts. A CNC lathe pays off when you repeat parts, need consistent accuracy or want to run with less operator time.

Accessories

Chuck size and type, steady rest, follow rest, tool post and a digital readout change how useful the lathe is. Compare complete offers, not only the base machine.
