Calculator
Hydraulic press force calculator
Find the pressing force of a hydraulic cylinder from the working pressure and the piston diameter.
How it works
The force equals the pressure multiplied by the piston area. Friction and seal losses reduce the real force a little, so the nominal force of a press is a design value.
F (kN) = p (bar) × A (cm²) / 100 A = π × D² / 4
Example
A pressure of 200 bar on a piston of 100 mm diameter gives about 157 kN, which is roughly 16 tonnes.
On the working stroke the effective area is the full piston area. On the return stroke the rod area reduces it.
