Application
Machines for general machining and job shops
Job shops make many different parts in small and medium batches. The machines must change over quickly, hold accuracy and cover a wide range of part sizes.
What matters most
Flexibility comes first. Look at the range of part sizes the machine can take, how fast you can set up a new job and how many tools the magazine holds. Accuracy and repeatability matter because the same machine will run many different jobs.
Typical machine choices
Vertical machining centers cover most prismatic parts in one clamping. Lathes handle turned parts and shafts. Milling machines and drilling machines remain useful for simple jobs and for keeping the main machines free for demanding work.
Plan for growth
If you expect larger parts or more volume, consider a machine with some reserve in travels, table load and spindle power. Automation such as probing or pallet changers can be added later on suitable models.
